The Marlborough Sounds are an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys. Covering some 4,000 km² of sounds, islands, and peninsulas, the almost fractal coastline has 1/5th of the length of New Zealand's coastline. According to Māori mythology, the sounds are the prows of the sunken waka (canoe) of Aoraki.

The sounds were extensively travelled and partly inhabited by Māori groups before the coming of the Europeans, using the sounds as shelter from bad weather and partaking of the rich food sources. Marlborough is New Zealand's largest winemaking region, with about 65 wineries and 290 grape growers, and over 4,000 hectares planted in grapes.

Weather

Because much of the Marlborough region is sheltered by high country to the west, south and in some areas to the east,it is New Zealand's sunniest region.

Warm, dry and settled weather predominates during spring. Typical spring daytime maximum air temperatures range from 20°C to 24°C, but occasionally rise above 28°C.
